Preparing for your Adventure
Hecla Oasis Adventures' programs are designed to get you outside and up close and personal with the world around you. It's important to remember that the natural world is unpredictable and taking a few simple steps will help assure that your experience is comfortable and fun.
Wear comfortable and appropriate footwear
- While the trails on Hecla Island are for the most part flat, there will always be some uneven spots along the way and sensible footwear like runners or hiking boots will protect your feet from stones or other unforeseen 'bumps in the road'.
Protect yourself from the sun (even in winter)
- Manitoba enjoys some of the sunniest weather in Canada, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Be sure to wear sunscreen and a hat.
Dress for the weather (maybe even overdress)
- The expression "If you don't like weather, wait 5 minutes" can definitely apply to Hecla. Be aware of the weather forecast and dress appropriately. Layers are especially helpful and will let you adapt as you get warmer and colder. Dress especially warmly for night programs such as Waiting for Dark, Evening Expeditions and Snowshoe by Starlight. No matter how warm it was during the day, it can get cold when the sun goes down, especially if you're sitting still.
Stay hydrated!
- Although some programs include snacks, it's always a good idea to bring your own water.
